This past weekend, we dove into the world of Southern PA Metalfest (SPAMF)—a growing force in Pennsylvania’s local heavy music scene, now entering its second year at Codorus State Park in York County, PA. Held on June 20th and 21st, the two-day event showcased what the regional metal community is all about: energy, passion, and a deep commitment to uplifting local talent.
Founded and operated by local musician Hayden Shoemaker of Deceitful Past, SPAMF was born from a simple idea: create more opportunities for local bands to perform—and do it right.
“Back in March of 2024, SPAMF was started with just my brother, my dad, and me,” Hayden shared. “We were sitting in our garage/practice space, just trying to find ways to play out while supporting other local acts. We really just love playing live shows, and it gave me a chance to show off some of my mixing and lighting techniques that I’m going to college for.”

This year, the festival’s growth was undeniable, expanding from a one-day show to a full two-day lineup of nonstop performances.
“Last year we had a Fall Metal Bash in September, and I think either Delenda or Eyes of the Living really stole the show. They always put on a hell of a set and have been so kind to me—so they’ll always hold a special place in my heart. This year, I really think Dreams of Eden is going to blow everyone away. I got to play with them back in January, and man—they are fantastic, live and on record.”
The 2025 lineup featured 19 total bands, with Üga Büga and Burn The Martyr headlining and bringing such great ends on both days. Some highlights from the event featured Dreams of Eden’s Evil Dead Tribute and Defenestrated Treachery’s ending hit, “Coward“.
“Southern PA Metalfest, in the larger sense—at least in my eyes—is about representing the growing 717 music scene,” Hayden said. “I try really hard to make sure new and upcoming talent can be showcased every year. Don’t get me wrong, nothing against venues or booking agents who focus on established artists, but the new artists have to start somewhere.”
With passionate organizers, a stacked lineup, and a loyal community behind it, Southern PA Metalfest is quickly becoming a staple of PA’s underground scene. What started in a garage has transformed into a full-scale celebration of heavy music, local grit, and DIY spirit—and if this year is any indication, it’s only going to get better from here.
