New Brookland Tavern Fundraiser: A Night with The Callous Daoboys

A little over a month ago, Columbia SC’s oldest music venue known as New Brookland Tavern made fans aware that the building that the venue is located in is up for sale, leaving employees and fans unsure of what the future holds for the place that fans and bands from all over the country call home.

For a while, it was unclear if NBT was going to move or stay in the same building; however, a GoFundMe titled “Save New Brookland Tavern” was created by Carlin Thompson was created for supporters to help make NBT’s next move a little bit easier for everyone involved and make the transition a seamless one. The staff at New Brookland Tavern have gone to great lengths in a short amount of time to make sure New Brookland Tavern is still going to be around, whether it is at the State Street location or in a new spot.

This past week, NBT announced that the venue is moving, although the location has not been announced yet.

In a little over a month, $37,602 was raised via GoFundMe as well as proceeds from different t-shirt designs, one being from The Acacia Strain’s Vincent Bennet.

In addition, to the online fundraiser and fundraiser t-shirts, Atlanta mathcore band The Callous Daoboys played a fundraiser show the evening of 9/28/2023, to show their love and support to the venue that they call home. Supporting the Callous Daoboys were bands Abacus (SC), Dryrot (SC), Cramped Casket (NC), and Mouthbreather (MA).

Every band’s set consisted of pieces of sentiment regarding NBT and how the venue is special for each of them. Some band members played their first show at NBT, some have been going to NBT their whole lives, and some have seen some really special shows during their time visiting as fans.

For The Callous Daoboys, they played NBT on super bowl sunday in 2018, where the brought three people (more or less). Callous Daoboys vocalist Carson Pace, gave a speech before the band’s last song about how Carlin Thompson gave the band a chance to play, unsure of what the turnout was going to be, and since then has supported them in any way he can. The fundraiser show was 3/4 sold out, making it a successful night for NBT and gave fans and supporters a way to give back.

While details of NBT’s move have not been announced, there are plenty of ways to support the venue during the final months at the original location. There have been many shows of all genres put on the schedule that fans can check out and get a last (or even first) experience of NBT in the original building.
