If “Br0oTaL” was a genre, Ohio death metal band Sanguisugabogg would be its poster child. The four-piece act brought their brand of downtuned metal to Motorco in Durham, North Carolina as they wrapped up their spring tour.
As soon as the lights dimmed and Sanguisugabogg took the stage, the venue erupted in cheers and then just as quickly, as the first distorted guitar note struck, the pit immediately opened into frenzied chaos. Within seconds, it seemed like the entire room was moving with those in the pit pushing and flinging arms and legs in every direction, and those at the front of the stage non-stop headbanging. Before the first song was over, a few members of the crowd had found their way to the stage and began the constant onslaught of stagediving that would continue without pause for the next hour.

A definitive highlight of the band’s performance was when vocalist Devin Swank reminded the crowd about the last few times they played the Motorco venue and how they considered Durham, NC like a second home to the band. This of course caused a roar from the audience, followed by a swift call from Swank to “now move somebody” as their next song exploded from the speakers.
This show was truly a thrill to be at and the energy the entire night was at an all time high. For myself personally, it reminded me of when I first began going to shows in my teenage years and being in awe of the mosh pit and everyone stage diving. For anyone in search of that experience and needing a visual reminder that the metal and alternative music scenes are alive and well, might just need to find themselves at a Sanguisugabogg show.
