Doom metal pioneers Pallbearer have had an impressive career spanning nearly two decades. Last year, the band released their fifth album Mind Burns Alive, and embarked on their extensive Temporary Spaces tour in support of the record. Picking up again this year, the group’s second leg of the tour kicked off last month, and included a stop at The Meadows in NYC on Sunday.

The intimate venue was the perfect space to be immersed in Pallbearer’s heavy and growling sound. The quartet took the stage as red lights lit up the venue, establishing the mood for what was to come. The set began with the building intro of “Silver Wings” before a wave of distortion and melody washed over the room. Fans responded to the cinematic music by approvingly bobbing their heads to the soaring lead guitar riffs. The rising momentum continued as the group dove into their next song, “Where the Light Fades”, a cut off their previously mentioned latest release. “Feel my head going under. Going under” sang the crowd with guitarist/vocalist Brett Campbell during the last verse of the song.

Throughout the approximately 75 minute set, the musicians were deeply engaged in the music. The band members would often jump into power stances, forcefully hitting their instruments, and rocking back and forth without missing a beat. “Brooklyn, you’re a very special place to us and we love coming here. Your support and love mean the world to us. Speaking of love, here’s a song about the sweet embrace of death!” joked the band towards the end of their set before playing “Given to the Grave”. Whether they’re playing songs about love, death, or anything in between, the group’s dedicated fans would certainly welcome them back to NYC anytime.
Pallbearer’s current string of US shows continues through June 12th, including a hometown Arkansas show on June 7th at Mutants of the Monster Festival. Full details on all dates can be found on their website.
