The talented Sydney-based band, Sons of the East, brought their “SONS” World Tour to Charlotte’s Underground at the Filmore on October 10th. Both Sons of the East and Kim Churchill, who opened the show, both delivering a series of uplifting songs and heartfelt moments.

By the time Sons of the East took the stage, fans were buzzing in anticipation. Without missing a beat, the group rolled through crowd favorites showcasing the band’s talent for ultimately blending a variety of genres with ease that translates to memorable and often catchy music. The mix of instruments and styles never felt forced; instead, it only amplified the fun contemporary folk-esque sound delivered with a tangible energy that fans have come to know and appreciate from Sons of the East.

Between songs, the band collectively displayed an affable charm, smiling as they thanked the Charlotte crowd for spending their Friday night with them. The band exchanged laughs and inside jokes with each other, at one point referencing a fan who yelled their performance of a song was “major” – wanting to clarify that this was, in fact, a good thing.

At one point, frontman Jack Rollins jumped down from the low stage and leaned into the front row, mic in hand, to connect with fans. This spontaneous moment of connection blurred the line between performer and audience. Moments like these exemplified the Sons of the East’s generous showmanship and their ability to connect with the crowd throughout the entire show. They reinforced the family-like atmosphere in the venue, in addition to various couples dancing to songs toward the back of the venue. You could tell the band members truly love what they do and cherish doing it together, their camaraderie onstage often as engaging as the music itself.

After an impressive set and encore, as the house lights came on and fans slowly filtered out, there was a collective feeling that we had just witnessed something genuinely special. Sons of the East delivered an energy-packed show of thoughtful, well-crafted songs, performed with the veteran confidence of seasoned musicians and the youthful spirit of a new generation.

If this performance was any indication, Sons of the East’s star is still very much on the rise. Any venue would be lucky to host the kind of unforgettable experience they gave the Queen City.
