The Senate had a strong lineup on August 21, with Tobacco Road opening the night before Penelope Road and Winyah took over the stage. I didn’t make it in early enough to catch Tobacco Road, unfortunately, but I was there for the rest of the show and got a good look at what both of the later sets had to offer.
Penelope Road was up first for me, and they were a great fit for the room. They came out with plenty of energy and settled into the set quickly, giving the night a nice sense of momentum without making it feel like they were trying too hard to manufacture it. The Senate can be a pretty good room when a band knows how to use the space, and Penelope Road did a good job of filling it.
By the time Winyah came on, the night was already rolling, and they kept that momentum going. Their set had a good balance to it and made for a strong way to finish the show. There were a few moments where the room really came alive, and it was clear that there were plenty of people there specifically to see them.
The biggest takeaway for me was just how well the whole lineup worked together. Even though I missed the opener, Penelope Road and Winyah offered two different enough sets that the night never felt repetitive. Both bands were clearly comfortable on stage, and neither had any trouble keeping things moving.
It wasn’t one of those shows where you need some elaborate story to explain why it worked. It was simply a really solid night at The Senate, with a good lineup, good performances, and a room full of people who were there to enjoy themselves. That’s a pretty easy combination to get behind.
