The open-air stage at Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre became ground zero for a relentless evening of ’90s rock nostalgia and top-tier musicianship this past Saturday night. Bringing together three defining acts of alternative radio for a massive summer triple-header, the Charlotte stop promised a hit-packed lineup from top to bottom. From sharp alternative hooks to extended jam improvisations, the crowd was treated to a raw, high-energy clinic in live performance from seasoned veterans who sound just as fiery today as they did thirty years ago.
Opening the evening with a shot of pure early-’90s energy, Spin Doctors proved that thirty-five years into their career, their signature pocket groove hasn’t lost a single beat. Kicking things off with “What Time Is It?” and “Margarita,” the quartet balanced foundational hits like “Jimmy Olsen’s Blues” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” with fresh cuts off their new record Face Full of Cake—including “I Liked You Better When Your Butt Was Big,” “She Stands Alone,” and “Still a Gorilla.” New bassist Jack Daley locked in seamlessly with the rhythm section, laying down heavy lines that underpinned a surprising cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain” before bringing the crowd to its feet with the inescapable sing-along climax of “Two Princes.”
Taking the stage next, Gin Blossoms delivered a tight set of power-pop that felt every bit as sharp and emotionally resonant as their landmark early work. Launching their performance with the soaring “Follow You Down,” frontman Robin Wilson steered the crowd through a stacked twelve-song set that balanced fan-favorite album cuts like “Hold Me Down,” “Learning the Hard Way,” “Mrs. Rita,” and “Hands Are Tied” alongside bittersweet staples such as “Lost Horizons,” “As Long as It Matters,” and “Until I Fall Away.” Driven by waves of chiming guitar hooks, the band brought the amphitheatre to a fever pitch with a relentless closing run featuring “Found Out About You,” “Allison Road,” “Hey Jealousy,” and the Empire Records soundtrack classic “Til I Hear It From You.”
When headliners Blues Traveler took over the stage, the Princeton-formed jam veterans immediately shifted the night into overdrive. Frontman John Popper strode out and went straight to work, launching the band from “Things Are Looking Up” directly into their legendary 1994 smash “Runaround.” Popper’s signature rapid-fire harmonica runs instantly filled the Carolina night, demonstrating that his technical speed, vocal power, and soulful delivery remain completely untouched after nearly four decades on the road.
The middle of the set highlighted the group’s loose, collaborative spirit and deep musical versatility. A crowd-pleasing, sing-along rendition of Sublime’s “What I Got”—a long-standing cover staple in their live shows—jammed directly into a heavy bass breakdown by Tad Kinchla that kicked off their early fan-favorite “But Anyway.”
The collaborative highlight of the set arrived when Spin Doctors vocalist Chris Barron joined Popper on stage for a rowdy performance of “Champipple,” turning the venue into a giant jam session between old friends before Ben Wilson cut loose with a fiery keyboard showcase of his own.
As the night built toward its peak, the energy in Charlotte reached a high point. A hard-hitting performance of “100 Years” morphed into a blistering cover of The Charlie Daniels Band’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” with Popper’s harmonica effortlessly tearing through the classic fiddle parts. The local crowd erupted for 1997’s “Carolina Blues,” which handed the spotlight over to drummer Brendan Hill for an explosive rhythm section feature that drove straight into the iconic, rapid-fire intro of “Hook.”
Blues Traveler returned to the stage for a poignant, single-song encore, bringing out Gin Blossoms frontman Robin Wilson to join them for a soulful cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “Breakdown.”
Charlotte got a night of pure magic defined by non-stop nostalgia, top-tier musicianship, and the enduring camaraderie of three legendary touring bands. From tight alternative anthems to sprawling, exploratory jams, all three acts proved their live power remains completely intact.
