Spinning Through the Heavy Times: The String Cheese Incident Ignites Charlotte, NC

The world feels a little heavy these days, but it still turns, and thankfully, so do we. That was the guiding ethos this past Friday night, June 19th, as The String Cheese Incident brought their sprawling Just Keep Spinning Tour to the TD Amp Ballantyne.

Marking their second full-scale Charlotte performance in two decades, the veteran jamgrass-and-beyond pioneers took the stage to the kind of thunderous uproar that only time, integrity, and unwavering fan loyalty can earn. What followed wasn’t just a show—it was a full-blown expedition.

What sets a modern Cheese experience apart is how beautifully they anchor their musical mind-bending in real-world community. Acknowledging that the collective cultural weight outside the venue gates can feel a bit overwhelming these days, the band intentionally framed this tour as an oasis of connection and release.

Partnering with the voter registration advocates at HeadCount for the “Just Keep Voting” initiative, SCI seamlessly bridged high-energy dance spaces with a sense of purpose. It’s a natural extension of the fiercely independent, fan-first ethos they carried into the digital age during the ’90s—building their own internet-era ticketing and online file-sharing networks to put their community first. On Friday night, that spirit of togetherness was the true foundation of the vibe.

Thirty years into their journey, the bond between Bill Nershi, Kyle Hollingsworth, Michael Kang, Keith Moseley, Michael Travis, and Jason Hann feels completely instinctual.

They aren’t up there chasing some flawless, rigid standard; they’re hunting for a shared frequency, a fluid connection where the band and the crowd move as one. And on Friday night, the Queen City locked right into that wavelength.

The musical journey kicked off with a steady “Solution” before exploding into a massive, 14-minute “’Round The Wheel” that had the amphitheater spinning under the Carolina sky.

An impromptu “Amp Jam” served as a sonic bridge into “One Step Closer,” but it was the earthy, 16-minute swagger of “Texas” that truly ignited the venue. By the time they wrapped the first set with a luminous 18-minute “Light Fantastic,” they had already delivered an hour and a half of relentless, mind-bending music.

If the first set was a slow burn, the second set was a complete showcase of vibe innovation. Emerging from a deeply rhythmic “Drums” sequence, they seamlessly launched into “Can’t Wait Another Day.” A staggering, soul-soothing 19-minute “Best Feeling” anchored the night, proving exactly why SCI’s reputation as live music heavyweights remains untouchable.

The band even blessed the crowd with a special “Charlotte Jam” before unleashing the high-energy “BollyMunster”—a sweet callback to last year’s encore. The dance party raged on through “Swingtown,” “Fete Tama,” and “Restless Wind,” culminating in a spectacular “Let’s Go Outside” sandwich that featured an unexpected, groovy detour into The Who’s “Eminence Front.”

To put the perfect capstone on the evening, the band returned to the stage to deliver a joyous, 10-minute encore of Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone.” It was a soaring, communal send-off. Thirty years in, The String Cheese Incident is still proving that while the outside world might be heavy, inside the music, we can always just keep spinning together.
